Post-Operative Rehabilitation Brisbane
What Is Post-Operative Physiotherapy?
Post-operative physiotherapy is a structured rehabilitation program that generally begins 1-2 weeks after surgery, aimed at restoring movement, strength and function.
Recovery from any surgery is a serious, long-term endeavour. It is crucial to manage this period with the help of professionals – missteps risk exacerbating the affected area, and can delay recovery by months.
PhysioPhi’s team of experts brings a holistic approach to post-op recovery, by evaluating your medical and personal history and creating a tailored program which keeps you informed and engaged every step of the way.

How Your Rehab Works?
Your rehabilitation starts with a thorough initial assessment, where we review your surgical notes and discuss your lifestyle, daily demands, and recovery goals.
Within a couple of weeks after surgery, we will generally begin to prescribe light daily exercises aimed at keeping the affected area moving and rebuilding mobility.
Each patient will progress at different intervals from here, depending on what operation they had and how it responds to treatment. Typically, within a couple of months you will move onto more intensive activities which help you get your strength and mobility back.
Your program is reviewed at regular milestones and adjusted as your strength and function improve, with the end goal of getting you back to full activity as efficiently as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the post-operative physiotherapy process involve?
Post-operative physiotherapy at Physiophi focuses on reducing pain and swelling, restoring movement, rebuilding strength, retraining function, and safely returning you to work, sport, or daily life. Your rehab is structured in phases and progresses based on healing timelines, your surgery type, and your goals.
What types of surgical procedures does Physiophi specialise in rehabilitating?
We regularly rehabilitate patients following knee surgery (ACL, meniscus, total knee replacement), shoulder surgery (rotator cuff, labral repair, stabilisation), hip surgery, ankle surgery, spinal surgery, and general orthopaedic procedures. Our clinic is equipped for both early-stage rehab and full return-to-function training.
How soon after my surgery should I start physiotherapy?
In most cases, physiotherapy should begin within days to 1–2 weeks after surgery (depending on your surgeon’s protocol). Early rehab is crucial to prevent stiffness, muscle loss, and delayed recovery. We follow your surgeon’s guidelines and tailor your program accordingly.
Why is formal physiotherapy necessary after surgery?
Without proper rehabilitation, many people never regain full strength, movement, or confidence in the operated area. Physiotherapy ensures optimal healing, correct movement patterns, reduced complication risk, and the best possible long-term outcome.
