Sports Physiotherapy Brisbane
What Is Sports Physiotherapy - And Do You Need It?
Put simply, sports physiotherapy is a specialised physio service focused on the prevention, treatment and management of injuries sustained during sports or exercise. Whether you are a social volleyball player, gym junkie, or elite athlete, sports physiotherapy can help to stop injuries and niggles from derailing your momentum – and keep you moving at your best.
Sports physio is different from general physio in that it is specifically geared towards achieving your athletic goals. Using a holistic approach which takes into account your history and life outside sport, every treatment plan is built around three stages: a thorough assessment of your injury and movement, targeted treatment to address the root cause, and a rehabilitation plan designed to get you back to full performance.
Our Sports Physiotherapy Services Include
Who Is Sports Physiotherapy For?
Sports physiotherapy can benefit anyone who regularly partakes in sports or exercise. Reaping the benefits of physical activity means taking care of your body, whether that means healing a serious injury, or diagnosing what is causing that persistent soreness. Some common ailments include:
Â
- Muscle strains and tears
- Ligament sprains (ankle, knee, shoulder)
- Tendon injuries (achilles, patella, rotator cuff)
- Stress fractures and bone stress injuries
- Hip, groin, and lower back pain
- Post-surgical rehabilitation
- Overuse injuries from running, cycling, or gym training
- Shoulder, elbow, and wrist injuries from racquet or throwing sports
Â
If you are affected by any of these, sports physio can help you get back on track.
What Happens in a Sports Physiotherapy Session?
Your first session at Physiophi starts with a thorough assessment. One of our experienced physios will take a detailed history of your injury and ask about your training load and goals. This is followed by a series of movement and functional tests to understand exactly what is going on.
Â
From there, you will receive a clear diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your specific injury and lifestyle. Treatment is hands-on and may include manual therapy, soft tissue work, dry needling, or joint mobilisation depending on what your body needs.
Â
You will also leave with a personalised exercise regimen to support your recovery between sessions. We aim to have our patients leave their first session already feeling some immediate relief, as well as having a clear understanding of their injury.
Â
Physiophi has improved quality of life for over 50,000 Brisbane patients, with sports physio being at the forefront of our people-centered approach.Â
Â
What makes Physiophi different is that we aim not just to leave our patients with a generic sheet of exercises, but to take an active, hands-on approach in your recovery. We strive to get you back on the field (or track, or pool!) quickly, and give you holistic treatment which will make your whole body stronger and more resilient for the long run.

FAQs
What types of conditions does Sports Physiotherapy treat?
At Physiophi, our sports physiotherapists in Brisbane treat a wide range of injuries related to sport, exercise, and active lifestyles. This includes muscle strains, ligament sprains, tendon injuries (such as Achilles, patellar and rotator cuff tendinopathy), joint injuries (shoulder, knee, ankle, hip), stress fractures, running injuries, gym-related injuries, and post-competition overuse injuries. We also help with performance optimisation, injury prevention, and safe return to sport.
What should I wear and bring to my first physiotherapy appointment?
We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being assessed (e.g. shorts for knee/hip issues, singlet for shoulder issues). Please bring any relevant scans, medical reports, referral letters, and a list of your current medications if applicable. If you’re attending Physiophi at a gym-based location, bring your trainers as part of your rehab may involve exercise-based assessment.
How long is an initial assessment, and what does it involve?
Your initial physiotherapy consultation at Physiophi is a comprehensive 45-minute assessment. It includes a detailed history, a thorough physical examination of the injured and surrounding areas, strength and mobility testing, a clear diagnosis, and a personalised treatment and rehabilitation plan. In most cases, you will also receive hands-on treatment and begin your rehabilitation program in your very first session.
Can I access gym facilities as part of my rehabilitation?
Yes. One of the advantages of Physiophi is our access to fully equipped gym facilities. This allows us to progress your rehabilitation from early-stage rehab to strength, conditioning, and return-to-sport training all in one place. Your rehab will be tailored to your goals, whether that’s returning to the gym, sport, or everyday activities.
